Polished ∆2…especially the Gutenberg Bible

now that ∆2 has become 2.1

It is a long waited coviction for me to fix the Manifesto I wrote earlier. Since it is about typography and its design discourse, it only makes sense if the typography and layout in it is as conscious as the manifesto itself.

I flipped through the history of typography look book, as well as found a Gutenberg Bible in the libary. The manifesto has been renamed as Critical Typographic Design Manifesto. As this is a self conscious manifesto about accepting the difference ideology behind each typographic design discourse. But at the same time, the manifesto itself is also as dogmatic as those it calls out.

In terms of the layout, I tried so hard to mimic the Gutengerb Bible, and the ubiqitous certificate-ish design I could not really articulate that replaced the Baskerville book typeface on page 3. I also emplified the hierachy needed for the Swiss Styles page. For the Comic Sans page, I put more found images in it because that is what people do when they can make their own design with access to the Internet. For the second last page, I changed it to a type of layout I have been seeing everywhere lately. That feels like a better transition across time in the western typography history. I keep the fake futuristic layout in the last page and iterate the same improvisation for the cover of this manifesto for a complete echo.

At this point, I scrapt the other version. That is why the 4th page, with serif modernist design, I fixed the writing into a more balanced view on Moderism in typography rather than commenting on how dogmatic they were.

The last page the wingding says:

Devried from the latin phase “quis custodiet ipsos custodes”, “Who watches the watchmen?” I dare you to say the same:  “Who criticses the critics? “ There is no certain answer in where a criticism on typography is inherently wrong in any sense. It is no doubt that people should keep discussing and exchanging their thoughts on typography.

I did not know I could make such beautiful (to me) typographic layouts. There are several technical problems for making it into a print though. This drafted printing is also as satisfying to see.
